Ingredients

Scale

Fries and Topping

  • 2 lb bag crinkle cut frozen french fries
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp taco seasoning
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 cups Tex Mex grated cheese blend (or more depending on preference)

Gravy

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 packets (25 grams each) brown gravy mix

Instructions

  1. Cook the fries: Follow the package directions to cook the crinkle cut frozen french fries until crispy and golden.
  2. Prepare the beef: Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the lean ground beef and begin breaking it up into small pieces.
  3. Add onions: Incorporate the sliced yellow onion into the pan with the beef, continuing to break up the meat evenly as it cooks.
  4. Make the gravy: In a small saucepan, combine the two packets of brown gravy mix with 2 cups of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the mixture boils and thickens, then reduce to a simmer.
  5. Season the beef: Once the beef is browned, add the taco seasoning and 1/4 cup water. Stir well to combine and reduce heat to a simmer to let the flavors meld.
  6. Simmer both components: Allow the beef mixture and gravy to simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Assemble the poutine: Start with a layer of the cooked crinkle cut fries on a serving plate, then spoon 1/4 of the beef mixture over it, sprinkle with the grated Tex Mex cheese blend, and finally pour a generous amount of the warm gravy on top.
  8. Serve immediately: Enjoy your Tex Mex poutine hot for the best flavor and melted cheese texture.

Notes

  • For extra cheesy goodness, add more grated cheese according to your preference.
  • The taco seasoning adds the signature Tex Mex flavor; use mild or spicy based on your taste.
  • To keep fries crispy longer, serve immediately after assembling the dish.
  • You can substitute frozen fries with homemade fries if preferred.
  • Brown gravy mix packets can be found in most grocery stores or you can make your own gravy from scratch.
