Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup warm water, divided
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt

For the Garlic Butter Topping:

  • 5 tbsp butter
  • 2 large cloves garlic, finely grated or minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine ½ cup warm water, yeast, and honey. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. Add the flour, softened butter, and salt to the yeast mixture and mix until combined. Gradually add the remaining ½ cup warm water, mixing between each addition until the dough forms a ball. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour. Knead the dough for 7-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a dish cloth and let rest for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  2. Prepare the Garlic Butter: While the dough is resting, melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add the finely grated garlic, chopped parsley, and Italian seasoning. Stir and cook for 2 minutes to infuse the flavors. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Shape and Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the risen dough to release air, then shape it into a 1-inch thick tube. Cut the tube into small 1-inch pieces. Toss the dough pieces in the garlic butter mixture thoroughly to coat all sides. Arrange the coated pieces in a greased 8×4-inch loaf pan, placing them close together. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown on top. Optionally, garnish with additional fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • You can add shredded mozzarella cheese between the dough pieces for a cheesy version.
  • Use fresh garlic for best flavor; garlic powder can be used as a substitute in a pinch.
  • Make sure the water is warm but not hot to activate the yeast effectively.
  • Leftover bread is best reheated in the oven to regain its softness and crisp crust.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend designed for yeast breads.
