Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 small head of cabbage (cut into thick slices, about ½-inch thick)
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 egg (optional, for binding)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Prepare the Cabbage: Slice the cabbage into thick rounds about ½-inch thick. Brush both sides of each slice with olive oil to promote browning and place them evenly on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Make the Burger Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and the egg if you’re using it. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  4. Assemble the Burgers: Take a handful of the meat mixture and press it onto each cabbage slice, shaping it into a patty that covers the slice evenly. Make sure the patties are firm but not overly compacted.
  5. Bake the Burgers: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes, allowing the meat to cook through and the cabbage to soften slightly.
  6. Add Cheese and Broil: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and sprinkle shredded cheese generously on top of each burger. Switch the oven to broil and return the sheet to the oven for 3-5 minutes until the cheese melts and turns slightly golden.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Once done, remove from the oven and garnish the burgers with fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot with your favorite sides such as sour cream, mustard, or dipping sauces for extra flavor.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian alternative, substitute ground beef with a plant-based meat replacement to keep it meat-free.
  • Feel free to add additional spices or herbs like cumin, chili powder, or fresh cilantro to customize the flavor profile of the burger mixture.
  • You can store leftover cabbage slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days for meal prepping.
  • If you prefer, use ground turkey for a leaner protein option.
  • The egg is optional but helps bind the meat mixture especially if using lean meats or plant-based options.
