Banana Split Smores Dip Recipe

4.8 from 79 reviews

This Banana Split S’mores Dip is a delightful twist on two classic American favorites: the banana split and s’mores. Made in a cast iron skillet, layers of graham cracker crumbs, semi-sweet chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, fresh sliced bananas and strawberries, and chopped pecans are broiled until the marshmallows are perfectly toasted. Serve warm with graham cracker dippers for a gooey, fruity, and crunchy dessert dip that’s perfect for indoor ovens or outdoor campfires.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 4 graham cracker sheets (crushed into crumbs)
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, plus 1 tablespoon divided
  • 1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup sliced strawberries
  • 1 large banana, sliced (or 1/2 cup banana chips)
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Prepare the base: Crush about 4 graham cracker sheets into crumbs using a food processor or by pounding in a zip-top bag. Lightly grease a 10-12 inch cast iron skillet and spread the crushed graham crackers evenly on the bottom.
  2. Add chocolate chips: Sprinkle 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the graham cracker crumbs.
  3. Layer marshmallows: Cover the chocolate chips layer entirely with 1 1/2 cups of mini marshmallows, spreading them evenly across the skillet.
  4. Top with fruit and nuts: Arrange the sliced bananas and strawberries evenly on top of the marshmallows. Sprinkle the chopped pecans and the remaining 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips over the fruit.
  5. Broil the dip: Place the skillet in the oven on the top rack and broil on high for 3-4 minutes, watching carefully until the marshmallows puff up and turn golden brown.
  6. Cool and serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and allow it to cool for about 5 minutes. Serve warm with graham cracker rectangles or sticks for dipping.
  7. Alternative outdoor method: If cooking outdoors, follow steps 1-4. Then place the skillet on a grate over indirect heat from a fire or grill (not directly over flames). Heat until marshmallows melt, being careful not to burn the chocolate. Remove and cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute regular-sized marshmallows if mini are unavailable; cut them into halves or quarters for even melting.
  • Add pineapple chunks or sauce for a tropical twist.
  • Maraschino cherries (stemmed and chopped) make a great addition reminiscent of traditional banana splits.
  • Use any chopped nuts you prefer, such as peanuts instead of pecans.
  • Chocolate bars or mini candy bars can replace chocolate chips if chopped into pieces.
  • Smaller skillets 6-8 inches work too; scale ingredient quantities accordingly.
  • Feel free to customize amounts of fruit, chocolate, and marshmallows to suit your taste.
  • For dipping, graham cracker sticks, vanilla wafers, cookies, or pretzels all work well.
